Use this gentle, predictable routine to help your baby settle for sleep. Keep it calm and brief—about 20–30 minutes.

- Prepare a bath using a bath thermometer of 98 degrees Fahrenheit
- Bathe your baby using hypoallergenic baby wash and shampoo
- Put baby in fresh diaper and clean, comfortable sleeper with a zipper for easy diaper changes
- Read a bedtime story
- Dim the lights and reduce noise using a sound machine or fan
- Check that your baby is comfortable and not too hot or cold
- Feed your baby and sing a lullaby or use a story or phrase you can use every night
- Burp your baby and hold them upright if needed
- Sing softly and cuddle as needed while rocking or swaying
- Place your baby on their back in their own safe sleep space
- Make sure the crib or bassinet has a firm, flat mattress with only a fitted sheet
- Remove pillows, blankets, bumpers, stuffedtoys, and other loose items
- Keep the room smoke-free and comfortably cool
- Say goodnight and give your baby a chance to settle
Safe-sleep reminder: Always place infants on their backs for every sleep. Room-sharing without bed-sharing is recommended, and babies should not sleep on couches, armchairs, or in adult beds. Follow your pediatrician’s guidance for feeding and sleep, especially for newborns.
